This existing 70’s designed 2 storey building sits on the corner of James and Connor Streets within the Burleigh Heads commercial village precinct. The lower floor housed a series of disused commercial offices and post office facility. The upper floor contained an existing Telstra telephone exchange which was to remain unaffected by the refurbishment. Telstra was the original building owner and sold off the lower floor to our client who proceeded to reconfigure the floor plate into a series of shops and banks as national tenants. New shop fronts and pedestrian roof awnings were incorporated.

The upper elevation of the existing building (housing the telephone exchange) contained service louvers and exterior hoists and exit stairs which required to remain intact. In an effort to provide a new contemporary facade treatment, an angled bolt on louvre screen was devised to camouflage the existing austere looking facade, while keeping all existing functions in place upstairs.

The refurbished building interface with the public realm activated the street frontage to create an even more prominent and vibrant corner and a signature design statement for the community at large.
